So, I Bought a House…

So, I Bought a House…

April 04, 2025

There’s nothing quite like buying your first home – that rush of excitement when you get the keys, imagining how you’ll decorate, and the sense of accomplishment when you realize that yes, this is actually yours. I bought my first home in August 2024, and it’s been a wild ride ever since.

While I love making the place my own (paint samples, Pinterest boards, and a slowly growing collection of houseplants), I’ve also had my fair share of surprises. Let’s just say I now know way more about plumbing and electrical wiring than I ever planned to. If you’re thinking about buying a home someday, or if you’re new to homeownership yourself, here are a few things that have helped me stay (mostly) sane through the process:

1. Build Your Dream Team

Owning a home can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone! One of the best things I did was surround myself with people who know what they’re doing – and who are willing to teach me.

From my realtor and insurance agent to my go-to electrician, I’ve been fortunate to find professionals who explain my options rather than just trying to sell me something. Whether it’s understanding why a certain insurance policy makes sense or learning how to reset a breaker without panicking (been there), I’ve felt so much more empowered knowing the “why” behind the “what.”

2. Save Beyond the Down Payment

We all know that saving for a down payment is a huge part of buying a home. But here’s the thing: it shouldn’t stop there. Having extra savings set aside has been a lifesaver for those inevitable surprises that pop up – like the day my kitchen faucet decided to stage a mini flood.

A solid emergency fund can take a lot of stress out of the process. Whether it’s an unexpected repair or a project you’re excited to tackle (hello, new landscaping), having that cushion makes homeownership feel a lot more manageable.

3. Take Your Time

I’ll admit it – when I first moved in, I wanted my house to look perfect right away. But here’s the reality: buying furniture and decor takes time, and that’s okay!

Instead of rushing to fill every corner of my house, I’ve been taking things slowly. I’ve shopped sales, figured out what styles I actually like, and saved up to pay cash for pieces I really love. It’s been worth the wait – my space feels more “me” with every thoughtful addition.

Buying a home has been one of the most rewarding, challenging, and eye-opening experiences of my life. I’ve learned a ton, and I’m sure there’s still plenty more to discover (fingers crossed for fewer electrical lessons, though).

If you’re on your own homeownership journey, or thinking about starting one, remember: surround yourself with the right people, build up your savings, and don’t stress if things don’t happen overnight. Your home is a reflection of you – and great things take time.
